There is so much going on over this summer that you are spoiled for choice when it comes to betting. You have the Ashes Cricket between Australia and England, the UK Golf Open at Turnberry and some great horse racing in store.
The Ashes kicked off in fine form with Australia complaining about the English slowing play in the final innings to snatch a draw. This always happens between the two and will be the first of many spouts between the teams and captains Ricky Ponting and Andrew Strauss. For the second test at Lords in London, the bookies have both teams as 10/3 to win and a draw at 4/6. England have got off to a good start but their middlemen let them down with some poor batting after Strauss’ wonderful century, made even better due to the amount of pressure he must feel under since Andrew Flintoff’s un-required retirement announcement yesterday. Australia are still the series favourite at 8/11 although you suspect a win for England during this test will put them right in the driving seat.
The UK Golf has seen some spectacular bits of golf play with Jimenez just taking the lead during the final two holes of yesterdays play. If he continues that way then odds of 16-1 will seem very good indeed. The weather will take it’s part though and feel that players such as Retief Goosen and Ross Fisher will grind out the results required. Mr Tiger Woods will need to dig deep over the last three days, although he will have been pleased with his -1 par yesterday, Woods is now priced at 11/2 to win.
As for horse racing this summer we still have Glorious Goodwood to come and then there is the St. Leger which will provide some exquisite horse racing to brighten up everyone’s summer. Sea The Stars will surely be going for the St Leger in September to make it the full collection of classics, and was pulled out of the King George for that obvious reason.
The best online bookmakers will obviously be taking a lot of money this summer although with the right forethought the punters could make the bookies summer a poor one. What with world cup odds moving up and down more than the ftse index it will certainly be summer of highs and lows for all parties.
